MANSFIELD – The Le Moyne Dolphins overpowered the Mansfield University baseball team in a doubleheader at Shaute Field on Wednesday afternoon. The Mounties were edged by scores of 11-5 and 17-8.
Severe winds throughout the day certainly effected play. The Dolphins used the consistent gusts to their advantage as five different players crushed seven long balls over the course of both games.
The momentum of the first game was evident through the first inning of play. Le Moyne's first two batters of the game were retired but Camillo Spinoso and Andrew Taft each crushed two-out solo shots to give the Dolphins an early advantage.
Ryan DuBord kept the Mountaineers hitless until
Jake Haas came up with the team's first knock of the day, which was also the first of his career. MU was unable to bring him around to score in that frame, but it was a sign of things to come.
Solo home runs off the bats of David DiNorcia and Brian O'Mara, as well as a two-RBI double from Michael Smith, made it a 7-0 ballgame.
Mansfield was able to respond in the fourth inning however.
Josh Kulina led things off with a single and was brought home later in the inning by
Dom Lopez. After working a walk,
Brady Mengel also made it home to score when
Jake Haas recorded his second hit of the day.
An RBI single from
Tyler Guidos in the fifth made it 7-3, and it seemed like a much more manageable margin between the two teams. Le Moyne had other plans, scoring four more runs through the sixth and seventh innings.
Josh Kulina kept the Mounties alive in their final at-bats with a two-out knock to right field. With a full count and MU down to their final out, Guidos continued his hot streak with a double to left field, which plated Kulina.
Colin Treaster pinch ran for Guidos and was then brought home by Mengel's single to center field to make it 11-5, but Le Moyne was able to keep it that way and record the final out.
Timmy Saar,
Sean Heery,
Troy Thomas, and
Tom Heenan split the workload from the mound. The staff struck out 10 Dolphins in seven innings. Le Moyne's pitching struck the Mounties out just twice.
GAME 2
MU was able to jump up early as
Brady Mengel and
Eric Senior each provided sacrifice flies en route to a three-run first inning. However, the momentum was short-lived.
Le Moyne put up ten runs over the course of the next two frames, eight of which came with two outs in their respective innings. Shortstop Nick Nevins cleared the bags with a grand slam in the third.
A two-run double by
Tyler Guidos in the fifth gave MU their first runs in three innings. The Mounties ignited with a rally of sorts in their last at-bats.
Colin Treaster and
Tyler Guidos both walked with one out. Treaster then advanced to third with good heads-up base running on a fly ball to right field off the bat of Mengel. A rattled Connor Bennett beaned
Eric Senior to load the bases.
Cole Shomper and
Glen Addicott walked back-to-back to force in two runs, but that would be it for the red and black. Their eight-run outing stands as the most potent offensive production the Mountaineers have managed all season.
Every player in the Dolphins lineup recorded at least one hit.
Guidos was a perfect 3-for-3 at the dish, driving in two and scoring twice himself.
Koty Fitzgerald and Shander also added multi-hit games.
Mansfield is on the road Friday in Lock Haven and then hosts the Bald Eagles at Shaute Field on Saturday. Full coverage including a video broadcast with
Drew Patrick and Bob Michaels will be available at GoMounties.com.
