CORTLAND, N.Y./LEWISBURG, Pa. –
Hunter Watkins broke the 13-year-old Mansfield University javelin record and posted the third best throw in the nation so far this season in an incredible performance at the Bucknell Team Challenge on Saturday.
Â
Watkins recorded an NCAA provisional mark of 67.48 meters in the javelin, breaking the previous record of 65.79m set by Jeremy Confer in 2006. Watkins' previous career best mark was 65.43m set at the USA Track & Field Junior Championships in 2017 and his season best of 62.4m was set at the Millersville Metrics earlier this month.
Â
Watkins now owns the top javelin throw in the PSAC and the third best in NCAA Division II this season. He was less than a meter shy of hitting an NCAA automatic mark.Â
Â
The junior is a two-time NCAA Championship qualifier in the javelin.
Olivia Moats started things out strong for the Mounties at Cortland with a new PR in the women's pole vault with a distance of 2.70-meters, beating her previous PR of 2.63-meters. Moats was followed by
Vince McNeil who set a new PR of his own in the men's 100-meter dash at 12.14 seconds, narrowly missing a PSAC mark.
Ryan Clifford continued his dominant outdoor season in the men's 1,500-meter run with a sixth-place finish in a field of 47 runners. Clifford's 4:05.06 finish was good enough for a PSAC mark and a new PR.
Clifford was joined by fellow Mountaineers
Jordan Holmes and
Travis Keefe, with both of them setting new PR's in the 1,500-meter run. Holmes finished with a time of 4:10.63 and Keefe at 4:19.19.
Ryan Morrissette kept things going with a PR of his own at 4:21.60 to round things out for Mansfield in the 1,500-meter.
Caden Fisher would have his best performance of the 2019 outdoor season, when he compiled a top-ten finish and a new PR in the men's 110-meter hurdles at 16.38 seconds, narrowly missing a PSAC mark. Fisher would be followed by senior
Nicholas Auchenbach, who ran his season-best time in the men's 400-meter dash at 50.07 seconds. His time was good enough for a 7th-place finish and a PSAC mark.
Quincy Amabile would have a performance for the ages in the men's 10K, compiling a 32:42.21 finish. This time would be good enough for a PSAC mark, a new PR, and a second-place finish in a field of 13 runners. His time was also good enough for an All-Atlantic Region Track & Field Conference mark.
Conor Kojola rounded the day at Cortland out for Mansfield in the men's javelin throw with a distance of 38.88-meters, good enough for 9
th place in a field of 23 throwers. His throw was just short of a new PR.
Alysa Davey-Bostic followed Watkins by setting a PR of her own in the women's high jump at 1.55-meters, just missing a PSAC mark.
The Mounties will return to action this Thursday, April 25th when they travel to the Penn Relays hosted by the University of Pennsylvania.Â
