BLOOMSBURG -
Hunter DePrimo carried a valiant no-hit bid into the fifth inning, and
Camren Ney stayed hot at the plate against Bloomsburg on Thursday afternoon, but the Mansfield University baseball team was edged 3-2 by the Huskies after a late comeback effort at Danny Litwhiler Field.
In the first game of the day, Bloomsburg struck early for two runs and then burst for seven more in the fifth and sixth innings. A solo shot from Nate Krizan in the second inning got things started. Both Ben Newbert and Cole Swiger also provided longballs later on. Swiger led the Huskies, going 3-for-4, while Andrew Holmes delivered a 2-for-3 performance which included two doubles, an RBI, and a walk.
Mansfield scrapped together four hits, two of which came from
Camren Ney.
Brady Mengel and
Koty Fitzgerald each singled, but the Mounties were unable to counter the potent offensive charge of Bloomsburg.
Josh Kulina and Fitzgerald each stole a base as well. Starting pitcher
Evan McAndrew diced up five Huskies over five innings,
Joseph DePerno also recorded a strikeout in his inning of relief.
GAME 2
Although they were again held to four hits, the Mountaineers were guided by
Hunter DePrimo on the mound. The sophomore went into the fifth inning with a no-hitter and a 1-0 lead.
A timely round-tripper off the bat of Shiffer gave the Huskies a 2-1 lead.
Hoping to spark some momentum in the comeback effort,
Camren Ney responded with a solo shot in the sixth to make it 3-2. Ney now has 10 hits in his last 24 at-bats; over his last three games he is 5-for-9.
That would be the extent of the Mounties offensive production however as Bloomsburg's Zach Newmyer was able to close it out for his league-leading sixth save of the season.
DePrimo went the complete game, striking out ten Huskies in six innings.
