NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. –
Meghan McGinley and
Brooke Roys combined for a complete game, two-hit shutout in the circle as Mansfield cruised to a 16-0 win over Penn State-Schuylkill to earn a split in a pair of games Monday.
The Mountaineers led early, but Michigan-Dearborn rallied for a 7-5 win in the first game of the day.
Joelle Snyder led off the bottom of the first inning against UM-Dearborn with a walk followed by an
Alli McGovern single in the hole at short. Two batters later,
Alexis Easling drilled a three-run homer to left field to give the Mounties a 3-0 lead.
It was the first career home run for the freshman Easling and the first home run of the season for Mansfield.
After a scoreless second,
Alli McGovern reached on a walk and moved to second with a stolen base before scoring on an error.
Dearborn responded in the top of the fourth, stringing together four hits to score four runs to tie the game. In the bottom of the frame,
Devin Jones reached with a lead-off double before scoring on a
Leah McGovern RBI single to give Mansfield a 5-4 advantage.
Dearborn continued to roll in the fifth inning, scoring three runs on three hits to take the lead for first time in the game.
Mansfield was unable to rally for the win.
Erin McCune earned the win, pitching 4.0 innings with five hits and four earned runs. Ashlynn Henderson pitched three shutout innings in relief with just two hits allowed to earn the save.
In the nightcap, Mansfield jumped on Penn State-Schuylkill early, hanging nine runs in the bottom of the first.
Snyder opened the scoring by crossing home on a wild pitch before
Cassidy Smith drove in another run with a double to the gap. Deshea Jones plated a run on a fielder's choice and later scored on a
Leah McGovern single up the middle.
Devin Jones scored following an error and
Alli McGovern plated a pair of runs with a single into centerfield. Smith drove in two more runs with another single to center to cap a nine-run inning.
In the second inning,
Lacey O'Donnell drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to left field before Snyder plated another with hit up the middle to extend the Mountie lead to 11-0.
Abbey Woodard opened the scoring in the third, driving a two-run single into right field before a
Lacey O'Donnell triple plated two more.
Shaelyn Marx singled to right field to score Mansfield's 16
thrun of the game.
McGinley earned the win in her first career appearance in the circle, striking out a pair while allowing just two hits and no walks in 4.0 innings of work.
Brooke Roys preserved the shutout, tossing a hitless fifth inning with a strikeout.
Mansfield plays Chestnut Hill on Tuesday in a make-up from Sunday's originally scheduled game.
