BLOOMSBURG – In their final road game of the season, the Mansfield University women's basketball team fell 64-31 to Bloomsburg at Nelson Field House on Wednesday evening.
Â
The Huskies (17-9, 12-6 PSAC) entered Wednesday as the second-ranked team in the PSAC East. Battling Kutztown for the number one seed, Bloomsburg exploded for 22 points in the first quarter against the Mounties, hitting 53% of their shots from the field.Â
Sydney Reed chalked up a 3-pointer, but it had taken Mansfield over two minutes into the start of the contest to get on the board. Â The Huskies then went on an 18-6 run, gaining a 16 point advantage before the end of the first 10-minute stanza.
Â
MU was able to slow Bloomsburg down in the second, defending the field substantially better than they had in the first. The Mounties outshot BU from the field, but the Huskies were able to pull down seven offensive rebounds in the second quarter and came into halftime with a 33-17 lead.
Â
No Mounties scored in double figures.Â
Mia Leonard scored six points of her team-high nine points in the third quarter, but Bloomsburg sparked again, scoring 21 points on 61.5% shooting from the field. They held a 54-29 lead entering the fourth quarter.Â
Â
Both Leonard and
Paige Whitfield brought down six rebounds, but it was Whitfield that led the team in blocks. Leonard, who entered the game with a conference leading 69 blocks, was empty in that category on Wednesday.
Â
Alyssa DeNofa scored a season-high five points while shooting 100% from beyond the arc. The sophomore also came up with a rebound and a steal.
Â
Ellie Thompson scored five points to go with five rebounds and three steals. She now has 196 points in her freshman campaign.
Â
MU shot just 24% overall on the night, 10.5% from 3-point land (2-for-19). Turnovers proved to be the final straw, as Bloomsburg scored 24 points off of 24 Mountie turnovers.
Â
The Mountaineers return home for their final game of the season on Saturday afternoon when they host Cheyney at First Citizens Community Bank Court in Decker Gymnasium.
