Trevor English and
Christian Simmons both scored in double-figures in their Mansfield University men's basketball debut, but the Mounties ran into a high-powered No. 4 West Liberty offense, falling 129-79, on Saturday, Nov. 9 on the first day of the Shaw Tournament in Raleigh, N.C.
English poured in a team-high 22 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the field and added nine rebounds. Simmons netted 19 points and grabbed five boards while drilling 7-of-8 shots at the foul line.
Jahmir Green scored eight points in his first game in over a year and
Eli Alvin contributed nine.
The No. 4 Hilltoppers carried a 62-33 lead into the break thanks to 19 points-off-turnovers and 43 percent (19-of-44) shooting from the field. Mansfield stayed within single-digits for the first half of the period, but West Liberty extended their lead to 10 with 9:14 to go and never relinquished. English led the Mounties with 16 points and six rebounds in the half, while Dalton Bolon led all scorers with 21 points on 7-of-9 shooting for the Hilltoppers.
The Mounties could not draw any closer as the Hilltoppers maintained a double-digit lead throughout the second period.
Bolon led the Hilltoppers with a game-high 32 points on 10-of-12 shots from the floor. Will Yoakum added 19 points and Pat Robinson lll netted 18.
The Mounties are back on the court tomorrow afternoon, Nov. 10 at 2 p.m. when they conclude the Shaw Tournament by taking on non-conference foe St. Augustine's University.
