LOCK HAVEN – Sophomores
Mia Leonard and
Erin Gibbons both scored 12 points and combined for 12 rebounds in an 80-46 road setback for the Mansfield Mountaineers women's basketball team against Lock Haven University on Saturday afternoon at Thomas Fieldhouse.
Â
On the opening play of the game, Gibbons drove to the hoop and was fouled on her way up. She hit one of her free throws, giving Mansfield (0-10, 0-7 PSAC) their only lead of the game. Following Gibbons' free throw, LHU ignited from the field. The Bald Eagles hit back-to-back 3-pointers in the first quarter to jump out to a 6-1 lead. From there, Lock Haven never looked back.
Â
Lock Haven's scoring leader on the season, Rileigh Devine, scored seven of her 12 point in the first ten minutes of play. However, it was teammate Ahnera Parker who sparked versus Mansfield. Coming into the contest averaging 12 points per game, the freshman went off for 21 points while shooting over 53% from the field and grabbing five rebounds.
Â
Despite the size advantage, it was from beyond the arc that the Bald Eagles (8-5, 4-3 PSAC) did the most damage, connecting 12 times in the game from 3-point land. The Mounties shot just 15 times from long range, despite ranking among the conference leaders as a team in 3-point field goal percentage. With just over two minutes in the third quarter, Gibbons hit the first Mansfield 3-pointer on the day. In the fourth quarter,
Paige Whitfield also hit a trifecta, which would be the last time the Mounties would connect from downtown, sitting at 2-for-15 (13.3%) as a team. Whitfield ended the game with seven rebounds, which tied her career-high and set her season-high for 2018-19.
Â
Despite a tough day of shooting from the field as a team, Leonard's 12 points came in an extremely efficient 18 minutes of play in which she shot 50% and also pulled down the team-high eight rebounds.
Â
Ellie Thompson was the third Mountie to reach double digits in scoring versus Lock Haven. The freshman also recorded seven rebounds, matching her career-high for the third time. The Emlenton, Pa. native averages 10 points per game and 5.1 rebounds per game so far in her first year campaign. In the third quarter, Thompson hit a pair of free throws to tally the 100
th point of her career.
Â
Freshman counterpart
Madison Mattas connected on the first field goal of her career in the second quarter. Mattas also added her career-high of two assists in the effort for Mansfield.
