SHIPPENSBURG –
Sydney Reed had a career day for the Mansfield University women's basketball team, scoring her season-best 11 points against Shippensburg, but the Raiders pulled to an 84-44 win on Wednesday evening at Heiges Field House.
Â
Shippensburg got on the board first, pulling to a 3-0 lead before
Mia Leonard brought down an offensive rebound and found
Ellie Thompson at the opposite block. Thompson drove to the middle of the lane and finished for the Mounties' first points of the game. After starting the game on an 8-2 run, Shippensburg never trailed in the contest. The first half saw the Raiders (9-10, 5-6 PSAC) outshoot the Mounties by 30% from the field.
Entering the intermission, Aunbrielle Green had already scored 15 of her 19 points in the game for Shippensburg. Â The nation's fourth leading scorer Arielle Jones hit her season average in points right on the head by dropping 25 Wednesday night.
Â
Reed's 11 points were a new career-high, nine of which came from downtown. The freshman shot over 40% from both the field and 3-point land while also grabbing a rebound, dishing out an assist and coming up with two steals in her season-high 31 minutes of action. First-year counterpart
Autumn Hultberg also saw career-highs, finishing the day with six points, two rebounds, and a block in her six minutes of play.
Â
In addition to the Mounties' first two points of the game, Thompson went on to score six more points and collect six boards.
Paige Whitfield was held scoreless in the first half, but scored seven points and came away with three steals in the second. Â
Â
Through the first five minutes of play,
Mia Leonard was an unbelievable force under the hoop. The sophomore collected six rebounds while battling the PSAC's leader in the category, Shippensburg's Lauren Pettis, on the boards. Leonard finished the night outrebounding Pettis 10-9, and added five more blocks to her impressive totals; she now ranks first in the PSAC with 34.
Â
Nine different Mounties scored in the road effort, including
Noelle Cameron who finished with four points, exactly enough to give her 100 points on the season. In addition to Leonard and Thompson's combined 16 rebounds, Cameron pulled down another six, giving her 93 this year. With seven more rebounds she will be the second Mountie this season to eclipse both the 100 point and 100 rebound marks.Â
Â
Alyssa DeNofa and
Hanna Johnson both scored two points for Mansfield. Johnson's were the first of her career. Denofa also added a rebound, while the freshman Johnson tallied an assist on the final basket of the game.
McKenzie Hatch provided a rebound and an assist.
Â
Four players hit double figures for Shippensburg, and the Raiders outrebounded Mansfield 42-33, leading to 13 second chance points. Ship also scored 56 of their points in the paint and shot 51.6% from the field in the victory.
