PHILADELPHIA – Mansfield rallied for 30 points in the fourth quarter, but it would not be enough in a 59-44 loss at CSFL South rival Chestnut Hill Friday night at Garthwaite Stadium.
Mansfield (0-2, 0-2 CSFL South) opened the scoring midway through the first quarter when
Adam Hutchison found
Quinn Henry on a 30-yard touchdown pass. However, Chestnut Hill (1-1, 1-0 CSFL South) scored 45 unanswered points over the next three quarters to take a sizeable lead over the Mounties.
The Mountaineers found paydirt again through the air when
Gary Raupers II connected with
Imir Pope on a 12-yard scoring pass, but the Griffins answered with a touchdown pass of their own on the next drive. Chestnut Hill entered the fourth quarter holding a 52-14 advantage.
Raupers threw another touchdown pass to open the Mountaineer's comeback attempt in the fourth quarter, this time a 44-yard strike to
Jayden Walker. Minutes later, Walker scored again on a heads-up play to scoop up a loose ball and find the end zone from a yard out, cutting the Griffin's lead to 52-30.
Chestnut Hill returned the ensuing kick-off 50 yards for a touchdown to add to its lead.
Walker scored on a 22-yard rushing touchdown and Henry hauled in a Hutchison heave from 16 yards out to cap a 30-point fourth quarter by Mansfield. However, the deficit would be too great to overcome.
Hutchison completed 15 passes for 216 yards and two touchdowns with Raupers connecting on five passes for 127 yards and two touchdowns.
D.J. McLean had four receptions for 107 yards and now sits just 31 yards away from passing Kurt Logan (2013-16) for the top spot on the sprint football career receiving yards list. Pope had six catches for 85 yards and a score with Henry recording three receptions for 80 yards and two touchdowns.
Walker led the Mountie rushing attack, gaining a net of 68 yards on 17 attempts. Raupers rushed in three successful 2-point conversion attempts in the game.
Andrew Schwenk led the defense with six tackles and a pass break-up.
Chestnut Hill outgained the Mounties 553 to 454 in total offense. The Griffins scored on all five trips to the redzone.
Mansfield continues a three-game road trip next Friday at Navy.
