MANSFIELD –
Quinn Henry opened the season with a 93-yard return on the opening kick-off, but Penn's offense proved to be too much as Mansfield fell in a 54-21 final at LUMA 2018 Saturday night at Karl Van Norman Field.
Henry's return opened the game in dramatic fashion, but Penn (1-0, 1-0 CSFL South) answered with a 61-yard drive to take a 7-6 lead.
On the ensuring drive, Mansfield (0-1, 0-1 CSFL South) came up with another big play when
Adam Hutchison connected with
Saville Pope on an 81-yard touchdown pass to put the Mountaineers back on top. However, Penn countered with a big play of its own with Eddie Jenkins finding Aiden Kelly on a 58-yard pass to retake the lead at 14-12.
The Quakers scored again on a Jenkins pass to Ben Klaus to cap the scoring in a wild first quarter.
In the second quarter, Hutchison finished an eight play, 63-yard drive when
D.J. McLean hauled in a 22-yard pass over a Penn defender to cut the deficit to 21-19.
The Quakers scored back-to-back touchdowns before the end of the half, but Mansfield's
Bryton Barna blocked the extra point attempt that was scooped up by
Jason Reed and returned all the way for two points. Penn took a 34-21 lead into halftime.
The Penn defense pitched a shutout in the second half with the offense adding 20 points to secure the win.
Penn totaled 569 yards of offense with 30 first downs in the game.
Hutchison completed 7-of-14 passes for 157 yards with two touchdown passes and an interception. Pope totaled a game-high 104 yards through the air with McLean adding 41 yards.
Barna and
Dajuan Buie led the Mountie defense with 13 tackles each.
Andrew Schwenk added eight tackles with
Nick Yarnevich posting seven.
Klaus and Jenkins combined for a monster 258 yards on the ground for Penn.
Mansfield travels to Chestnut Hill on Friday for a CSFL South contest in Philadelphia.
