INDIANA –
Larissa Motts scored the game-winning goal on a
Christie Buyer pass in the final minutes of double overtime to give Mountaineer field hockey a thrilling 2-1 victory at IUP Wednesday afternoon at George P. Miller Stadium.
The victory gives Mansfield (3-0, 0-0 PSAC) its best start since the 2012 season when the Mountaineers were ranked as high as No. 9 in the nation.
Buyer opened the scoring in the 17
th minute with an unassisted goal from five yards out to give Mansfield a 1-0 advantage. It was the first of the season for the junior and the seventh different Mountie to record a goal over the first three games of the season.
The lead would be short lived however, as IUP (1-2, 0-0 PSAC) countered with a goal in the 21
st minute when Georgiana Chiavacci played a rebounded ball into the cage.
Mansfield held a 10-4 shot and 12-1 penalty corner advantage in regulation but failed to find the go-ahead score.
In overtime, Mansfield continued to keep the offensive pressure on, adding six shots and three corners. It would be Motts and Buyer connecting for the win in the final two minute to keep Mansfield unbeaten. It was the second goal of the year for Motts.
It marks the first overtime victory for Mansfield since a 1-0 win at No. 7 Bloomsburg on Sept. 20, 2017.
The Mountaineers host Queens Charlotte on Sunday in the home opener at Karl Van Norman Field as part of Salute the Troops/LUMA Weekend.
