Softball Powers Past Clarion in 13-4 Win

CLARION, Pa. – Mansfield softball downed Clarion with a bang to split a PSAC Central doubleheader at Memorial Field on Saturday.

Mansfield (6-27, 6-10 PSAC C) outhit Clarion (8-13, 3-13 PSAC C) 17-12 in game one but the Golden Eagles took the 10-9 win. In the nightcap, the Mounties came back from a 4-0 deficit and powered through to a 13-4 victory.

In the opener, the Eagles got on board first with early runs in the first and second innings. After a scoreless inning Mansfield got down to business scoring three runs off the bat. Melanie Taylor drove in a run while doubling to put herself and Anastasia Hester in scoring position. Leah McGovern stepped the plate next and put both runners away on a single.

The Mountaineers held their energy scoring five more runs in the top of the third. Taylor racked up two more RBIs with a single before Joelle Snyder followed suit with a 2-RBI double to left center. Deshae Jones also plated a run while Mansfield totaled eight hits in the inning.

Mansfield would score again off a Hester single but it would not be enough after Clarion rallied back with a combined eight runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

Sierra Storm was dealt the loss while Laura Sadowski earned the win. Taylor led the offense going 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs.

Clarion struck first in game two, jumping out to a 4-0 lead with a pair of runs in the second and third innings.

The hit parade in the fourth began as Sterner singled to left field. Five more Mounties tallied hits while Devin Jones, Deshae Jones, Snyder, and Koryn Wickwire all drove in runs to put Mansfield ahead 6-4.

With Clarion unable to break the momentum, the Mountaineers continued to plate runners through the fifth inning. Sterner executed in a bases-loaded, two-outs situation, driving in three runs with a home run to seal the deal at 13-4.

Devin Jones was on fire going 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs.

Ari Young earned her second complete-game win of the season, allowing seven hits and two walks with three strikeouts. Macy Rubin took the loss for Clarion.

Mansfield hosts East Stroudsburg in a doubleheader on Saturday at Lutes Field. First pitch is set for 1:30 p.m.
