Softball Scores Six in Nightcap to Split with Pitt-Johnstown

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – Mansfield softball topped Pitt-Johnstown 6-5 in game two of a PSAC Central doubleheader to earn a split on Saturday.

The Mountaineers dropped the eight-inning opener 4-3.

In game one, Mansfield (7-6, 5-3 PSAC-C) went scoreless through the first three innings while Pitt-Johnstown (8-12, 4-4 PSAC-C) plated two runs in as many frames leading into the fourth.

With two outs in the fourth frame, Casey Pearce singled through the left side before Melanie Taylor got on board with a walk. Errors in the next play would put Leah McGovern on first and allow Pearce to put Mansfield in the game. Devin Jones matched Pearce's left-side single, driving in Taylor to tie the game 2-2.

Neither side would see runs in their next at-bats, but the Mountain Cats finally answered in the fifth taking their second lead of the game at 3-2.

Jones completed her perfect 3-for-3 game with a single-RBI double down the left line to tie the score once more. After a scoreless seventh frame, Pitt-Johnstown secured the walk-off win in the bottom half of the eighth.

Offensive leader Jones added two RBIs to her stat line with three put outs and four assists at shortstop. Joelle Snyder had two hits of her own while Rachael Sterner led with nine putouts.

Arianna Young put in a complete game of work with two strikeouts but took the loss. Kristen Coffay earned her fourth win.

In the second game, Mansfield opened the scoring with a whopping five runs in the second inning.

Anastasia Hester found home plate off a Taylor double to begin the scoring parade. Leah McGovern got on board off a pitching misadventure before Jones singled to load the bases. With just one out, Snyder dished out a disastrous double clearing all the runners and put the Mountaineers ahead 5-0.

UPJ cut Mansfield's lead by one in the second before a two-inning scoreless streak ensued.

In the top of the fifth, Pearce broke the silence with a double down the left line as Sterner scored what would be the winning run. The Cats crept dangerously close with four runs over the next two innings, but the Mounties would hold on for the 6-5 victory.

Jones had a day at the plate going 4-for-6 with a run and two RBIs. Snyder finished Saturday 3-for-7 with three RBIs.

Sierra Storm earned her fifth win with four coming off a full seven innings of world. The senior scattered 12 hits and just two walks bringing her ERA to 3.23. Melissa Wagner took the loss.

Mansfield returns home tomorrow to host Bloomsburg in a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
