Baseball Rallies Late for 7-6 Walkoff Win over Slippery Rock

KISSIMMEE – Camren Ney drove in the tying run and J.P. Bonanca scored on a walkoff wild pitch to cap a late, five-run rally to lift Mansfield to a 7-6 win over Slippery Rock on Thursday.

Owen Lukens put the Mounties on the board first, driving in Tyler Guidos with an RBI single to right field in the bottom of the second inning. However, the lead would be short lived as Slippery Rock (6-5, 0-0 PSAC West) scored three runs in the next inning to take the lead.

In the fourth inning, Lukens cut the Mansfield (4-6, 0-0 PSAC East) lead to 3-2 with another RBI single, this time in centerfield to bring in Brady Mengel.

The Rock would built its advantage to 6-2 with a pair of runs in the seventh inning and another in the eighth.

In the bottom of the eighth, Colby Schearer drilled a two-run homer to left field to bring the Slippery Rock lead to two runs at 6-4. It was the team-leading third home run of the year for the sophomore. Zach Merkle brought the Mounties within a run at 6-5 with his RBI single to score Ney.

Guidos relieved Mansfield starting pitcher Luke Hils on the mound in the top of the ninth where he set down the Rock batters 1-2-3.

Spencer Zuraski and Bonanca led-off the bottom of the ninth with back-to-back singles to put runners on first and second. Two batters later, Ney drove in Zuraski with an RBI single to right field to tie the game at 6-6. Bonanca later moved from second to third on a wild pitch before scoring the game-winning run on another errant throw by the Rock pitcher.

Guidos earned the win in relief, pitching a perfect ninth inning. Hils worked efficiently through 8.0 innings, striking out seven batters and totaling 97 pitches on the day. The senior did not issue a walk.

Ney and Lukens each went 2-4 at the plate for Mansfield.

The win snapped a five-game losing streak and avenged a 25-1 loss to Slippery Rock on Monday.

Mansfield completes its Florida schedule with a nine-inning game against Wayne State on Friday.
