Field Hockey Upends Mercyhurst 5-0 in PSAC Opener

MANSFIELD – Dana Evans scored a pair of goals as Mansfield upended visiting Mercyhurst 5-0 Wednesday afternoon in the Mountaineers' PSAC opener at Karl Van Norman Field.

Mercyhurst (1-7, 0-1 PSAC) had an early opportunity to take the lead with a penalty stroke, but keeper Brittany Ryan came up with a huge save to keep the game scoreless. Later in the half, the Mountaineers were awarded a penalty stroke that was also denied.

Mansfield (5-4, 1-0 PSAC) put the first goal on the board late in the first half when Meghan Griffin scored on a hard hit strike from the top of the circle for her second goal of the year. Caitlin Beauduy and Olivia Bell were credited with assists on the score. Just over a minute later, Mountaineer leading-scorer Larissa Motts gave Mansfield to 2-0 edge with her unassisted score. It was Motts' fifth goal of the year.

In the second half, the Mountaineers continued to keep the offensive pressure on Mercyhurst with Evans' scoring her third of the year in the 38th minute after redirecting a Beauduy pass form the top of the circle. Evans scored her second of the game in the 46th minute when she converted a penalty stroke.

Kalla Borden capped the scoring in the 59th minute when she took a Mikaila Chakon pass across the mouth of goal and beat the keeper. It was Borden's first career goal.

Ryan made 11 saves in the game with Misty Van Horn making four saves in 11 minutes to combine for the Mounties' second shutout of the season.

It marks the first time Mansfield has scored five goals in a game since the 2013 season and the biggest margin of victory since defeating Mercyhurst 7-2 during the 2012 season.

The Mountaineers hit the road to take on No. 4 Shippensburg on Saturday.
