SHIPPENSBURG –
Gabby Hieber's first-half goal tied the game at 1-1, but No. 4 Shippensburg escaped with a 2-1 win in PSACfield hockey action at the Robb Sports Complex on Saturday afternoon.
Back-to-back defending National Champion Shippensburg (7-2, 1-1 PSAC) got on the board first with Adrienne McGarridge's unassisted goal in the 14thminute.
Gabby Hieberevened the score at 1-1 with her first goal of the season following a Mansfield (5-5, 1-1 PSAC) penalty corner in the 26thminute.
Caitlin Beauduywas credited with her third assist of the season on the score.
Just under two minutes later, JazminPetrantonioscored what proved to be the game-winning goal to give the Raiders a 2-1 edge.
Beauduyhelped keep the Shippensburg lead to just one goal with her defensive save late in the first half.
In the second half, the Raiders put seven shots on cage, but Mountie keeper
Brittany Ryan would not allow another goal. MikailaChakonrecorded Mansfield's second defensive save of the game in the 75thminute to keep the Mountaineers within striking distance.
Ryan made 10 stops total in the game.
Shippensburg held a 21-7 advantage in shots and 10-5 advantage in penalty corners.
Saturday's loss shows a marked improvement by the Mountaineers who lost to Shippensburg 6-3 in the first meeting of the season.
Mansfield travels to Slippery Rock on Tuesday.
