Mounties Defeat Caldwell 34-26 on Senior Day to Win Third Straight

MANSFIELD – Adam Hutchison threw for three touchdowns and Brandon Allen accounted for three of the defense's nine turnovers as Mansfield earned its third straight win in a 34-26 final over Caldwell on a rainy Saturday at Karl Van Norman Field.

Prior to the game, seniors Colin Kilpatrick, Steve Sicilia, Tristin Cicio, Adam Hutchison, Dante Torrisi, Hunter Brown, Jakob Woods, A.J. McDermott, and Ryan Watson were honored as part of Mansfield's Senior Day ceremony.

The three wins on the season are the most for any team in the sprint football era dating back to the inaugural season of 2008. It marks the most wins for any Mansfield football team since 2003 when the Mountaineers went 8-3. The three wins for head coach John Evans are the most for a first-year head coach since Tom Elsasser won four games during the 1983 season.

Caldwell (0-6, 0-3 CSFL South) began the game in the driver's seat, scoring the first two touchdowns to take an early 13-0 advantage.

After the second Caldwell score, Mansfield (3-3, 1-3 CSFL South) responded by taking the ensuing kick-off and putting together a six play, 59-yard drive capped by a Gary Raupers 11-yard rushing touchdown. It was the team-leading third rushing score for the quarterback.

Early in the second quarter, the Cougar drive was extended when a Mansfield interception was called back following a penalty after the play. Caldwell got new life, but just when the Cougars were about to extend their lead, defending CSFL Defensive Player of the Week Allen scooped up a loose football and ran it back 94 yards for the score to give Mansfield the 14-13 lead. It was the second straight week that Allen scored a defensive touchdown after taking an interception to the house against Franklin Pierce.

Later in the half, Caldwell started a drive on the Mansfield 17-yard line following an illegal touching call on a punt. Carl Watson ran the first play 17 yards for a touchdown to regain the lead for the Cougars at 20-14.

Caldwell's next drive stalled when Bryton Barna forced a fumble to give the Mountaineers possession on the opponent 43. Six plays later, Hutchison found Quinn Henry in the end zone from 18 yards out to put the Mounties back on top 21-20 before halftime.

In the second half, Watson ran in another score to give the lead back to Caldwell, however the Mounties would take the lead for the final time when Hutchison connected with Imir Pope from six yards out to lead 28-26. Hutchison connected with Pope again in the fourth quarter on a 13-yard pass to give Mansfield a two-possession lead at 34-26.

Hutchison completed 10 passes for 135 yards and three touchdowns.

Brayden Gabel was the leading receiving for Mansfield, totaling 68 yards including a 54-yard reception in the third quarter. Vaughn Hines rushed for a team-high 55 yards.

Andrew Schwenk and Barna topped the team in tackles with 11 each while Dajuan Buie totaled 10 tackles.
Allen was responsible for three turnovers alone, picking off a pair of passes and recovering a fumble for a touchdown. Allen totaled 167 return yards on the day returning the fumble recovery 94 yards and two interceptions for 73 yards. He also added four tackles and a pass break-up.

Saville Pope picked off a pair of passes and broke up a pass to go along with eight tackles. Eugene Haynes and Deundray Andrews also had interceptions in the win.

Caldwell quarterback Tajae' Irby threw for 140 yards with back-up Steven Yost totaling 52 yards passing.

Watson was a workhorse on the ground for the Cougars, rushing 30 times for 196 yards and two scores.
