HILLBURN, N.Y. –
Adam Hutchison passed for four touchdowns and ran one in as Mansfield cruised past St. Thomas Aquinas 33-12 to end the season on a four-game win streak and secure the first winning season in the sprint football era Friday night at the Torne Valley Sports Complex.
Â
The Mountaineers finish the year with a 4-3 overall record, earning the most sprint football wins dating back to when the program was established in 2008. It is the most victories for any Mountaineer football team since the 2003 season when Mansfield finished 8-3 as an NCAA Division II member.
Â
Mansfield took the opening kick-off and marched down the field for a seven-play, 62-yard scoring drive capped by
Adam Hutchison's 3-yard quarterback keeper for a touchdown. The drive was highlighted by a 21-yard reception by
Brayden Gabel on third-and-long.
Â
The Mounties would hold on to the 7-0 lead until Hutchison connected with
Quinn Henry on a 4-yard touchdown pass early in the second quarter to jump out to a 14-0 advantage.
Â
St. Thomas Aquinas scored its first touchdown of the game to cut its deficit to 14-6. However, the Mountaineers took the ensuing kick-off and put together an eight-play, 48-yard drive ending with another Hutchison to Henry connection in the endzone. It was the team-leading fifth touchdown reception for the freshman Henry.
Â
Mansfield took the 21-6 advantage into halftime.
Â
On the Mounties' opening drive of the second half, Hutchison found
Imir Pope through the air for an 18-yard touchdown to build on the lead. Later in the quarter, Hutchison hit
Xavier Harris from 32-yards out for his fourth passing touchdown of the game to hold a 33-6 advantage. Hutchison's four touchdown passes are the second most in a game in sprint football program history and his 12 touchdown passes on the season also rank second.
Â
The Spartans scored again in the fourth quarter, but the Mansfield lead was too great to overcome.
Â
Mansfield led total offense 341 to 234 and first downs 25-17.
Â
Hutchison completed 15-of-25 passes and was responsible for five touchdowns in the game. Henry hauled in six passes for 68 yards and two touchdowns.
Colby Alpaugh topped the Mounties in rushing, netting 75 yards with
Jayden Walker adding 54 yards.
Â
Andrew Schwenk and
Bryton Barna led the Mansfield defense with nine tackles each.
Kayin Berger and
Chase Moser added six tackles a piece with Moser responsible for 2.5 sacks in the game.
Kashef Spratley had 1.5 sacks and a forced fumble. Back-to-back defending CSFL Defensive Player of the Week
Brandon Allen had an interception and broke up a pass.
Â
STAC quarterback Luke Sullivan was 18-32 through the air for 200 yards to go along with a touchdown and an interception.
Â
Head coach
John Evans matches Tom Elsasser for most wins in a season by a first-year head coach at Mansfield. Elsasser led the Mounties to four wins in the 1983 season.
