BLOOMSBURG – Mansfield scored what appeared to be the game-tying goal with eight minutes to play in the game, but it was later called off in a controversial 2-1 setback to No. 10 Bloomsburg Tuesday afternoon at Steph Pettit Stadium.
Bloomsburg (8-5, 2-4 PSAC) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on Tali Wehner's goal in the third minute following a penalty corner. The Huskies increased their lead to 2-0 in the 14th minute when Arden Morgans redirected a shot into the cage.
The Mountaineer defense would go on to hold nationally-ranked Bloomsburg scoreless for the next 56 minutes.
Christie Buyer brought Mansfield (8-6, 4-2 PSAC) within a goal in the 55th minute when
Irelynd Sullivan dribbled into the circle on the end line and made a perfect pass to Buyer who finished past a diving keeper. It was the sixth goal of the season for Buyer and the first career assist for Sullivan.
With eight minutes remaining in the game,
Gabby Hieber received a pass in front of goal and beat the keeper to the left side. After initially being ruled a goal, the officials waived off the game-tying score after it was deemed an illegal shot.
Mansfield was unable to find another game-tying goal, despite leading shots 13-11, shots on goal 9-5, and penalty corners 11-5.
The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Mounties. Mansfield is tied for third in the PSAC standings along with Shippensburg with a 4-2 conference record.
Mansfield hosts No. 1 West Chester at Karl Van Norman Field on Saturday.
