MANSFIELD – In the second game of the afternoon at Karl Van Norman Field on Wednesday, the Mansfield Mountaineers women's soccer team dropped a 5-0 decision to Gannon University in frigid fall temperatures. Cold rain showered throughout the contest and heavy winds made the conditions less than ideal for a serene evening of competition. Nevertheless, the show went on and both teams competed in their 13
th PSAC contest of the season.
Â
Gannon kicked things off right away, tallying a goal in the first five minutes of play. Hannah Hays connected right in front of the net with just the keeper to beat after receiving a pass from Taylor Lewis. Less than four minutes later, the Golden Knights struck again. This time Megan McCartney took a shot from the left side and tucked the ball into the top left side of the net. Mansfield was able to hold Gannon for the rest of the half and went on to tally five shots.
Â
In the second half, Mansfield saw some stellar looks at the net including a few breakaways, however Kennedy Solymosi remained unfazed in net for the Golden Knights. She stopped four shots and kept the Mounties shut out for over 71 minutes until backup keeper Maggie Wolodkevich came in for the remaining time to also record a save in the win. For Mansfield,
Stephanie Moir started between the pipes and logged 78 minutes. She was relieved by
Brianna Roys and the two freshman goalies combined for 14 saves on the night.
Â
Five different players scored for Gannon. Maddie North led the team with a goal and an assist. The Golden Knights took 28 shots in the contest, seven of which came from Taylor Lewis.
Â
Â
Mansfield's offense was led by
Alexis Bittel who played a stellar game on the wing. She provided some brilliant momentum upfield for the Mounties and took three shots, all of which were on goal. Facing a stifling Knights defense,
Bria Bittiger's role changed a bit, however she handled their pressure and distributed well-executed passes throughout the offensive front.
Â
The Mounties have a full week until their next game when they head to West Chester on Wednesday, October 24
th for a 2 p.m. matchup against a vote-receiving Golden Rams team.
