Evans Goal in Finals Seconds Lifts Mansfield Past IUP 3-2; Mounties Win Third Straight

MANSFIELD – Dana Evans scored the game-winning goal with six seconds to play in regulation to lift Mansfield past IUP 3-2 in a PSAC thriller at Karl Van Norman Field on Wednesday.

It marks the third straight win for the Mountaineers who improve to 4-1 in PSAC play. Mansfield moves to 8-5 overall, matching last season's win total.

Larrisa Motts put Mansfield (8-5, 4-1 PSAC) on the board early with her sixth goal of the season when she took an Evans pass and beat the keeper left in the fourth minute. However, the lead would not last long as Kimberly Kelly tied the game at 1-1 with her goal 30 seconds later.

At halftime, Mansfield held an 11-8 advantage on shots and 9-6 advantage on penalty corners.

Early in the second half, IUP (3-9, 2-3 PSAC) took its first lead of the game at 2-1 when Kalista Gioglio scored on a long shot following a penalty corner.

With just over 10 minutes to play in the game, Christie Buyer evened the score when she redirected a hard pass from the top of the circle by Mikaila Chakon. The goal was Buyer's fifth of the season and second in as many games.

Mansfield drew its 12th corner of the game with under a minute to play. Motts inserted the ball to the top of the circle where Caitlin Beauduy dished it over to Meghan Griffin. Griffin sent in a hard shot at the cage that was redirected by Evans past the keeper and into goal for the win. It was Evans' sixth goal of the season.

Brittany Ryan made four stops in goal for Mansfield to earn her eighth win of the year.

Mansfield led total shots 15-11 with 13 on target and led penalty corners 12-11.

IUP received three green cards and a yellow card in the game.

The win is the second for Mansfield against the Crimson Hawks this season after a 2-1 overtime victory in Indiana, Pa. earlier this year. It also avenges a 3-2 loss at the hands of IUP from last season where the Hawks scored with no time remaining at Van Norman Field.

Mansfield remains in sole possession of third place in the PSAC field hockey standings, a game back of No. 1 West Chester and No. 2 East Stroudsburg. The Mountaineers' four conference wins are the most since the 2011 season.

The Mounties are back in action when they travel to Bloomsburg on Tuesday, Oct. 23.
