SHIPPENSBURG - The Mansfield women's soccer team (0-1-1) dropped a 2-1 decision in overtime to the Shippensburg Raiders (1-1-1) Wednesday evening after a well-fought battle.
After a scoreless first half,
Alexis Bittel found the back of the net 24 seconds in for her first goal of the season. Bittel scored off a pass from
Bria Bittiger. Bittiger created one chance in the first half, firing a shot on goal that was stopped by the Raiders' goalkeeper.
Dana DiCamillo took over in the Mountie goal in the 50th minute after
Rachel Fox suffered an injury.
Shippensburg responded in the 58th minute with a goal from Isabella Weigel.
Mansfield then unleashed a series of shots within a minute of each other, but Shippensburg goalkeeper Delaney Shifflett kept the Raiders in the game. Bittiger,
Breanna Murphy,
Cay McNichol, and
Sierra Austin all took chances on the goal.
Entering overtime, a yellow card was dealt to Raider's Mariah Varner. Taylor Moore slipped an unassisted shot past DiCamillo 40 seconds later to end the game.
Fox finished the first half in the net with five saves before DiCamillo turned away five shots as well. Shifflett made two saves for the Raiders.
The Mountaineers return to the field this Saturday, Sept. 9 when they host Slippery Rock in their home opener.
