SHIPPENSBURG – Mansfield had two untimed penalty corner chances at the end of regulation, but St. Michael's would not bend, holding out for a 1-0 victory on Sunday at the Ship Field Hockey Classic.
Mansfield (1-1, 0-0 PSAC) kept the pressure on all game, outshooting the Purple Knights 6-4 in the first half and 9-2 in the second half. The Mountaineers put seven shots on frame in the game.
After a scoreless first, St. Michael's (1-1, 0-0 NE-10) Jenna Deschaine scored the game's only goal just five minutes into the second half.
Mansfield got six penalty corners in the final seven minutes, but was unable to push across the equalizer.
The Mountaineers held a 13-2 advantage on corners in the game and the Mansfield defense allowed the Knights to tally just six shots.
It was another incredible performance for St. Michael's keeper Anna Hurley who made seven saves a day after taking No. 1 Shippensburg into overtime.
Christie Buyer totaled four shots with three going on goal for the Mounties.
Mansfield travels to Slippery Rock on Wednesday before hosting Bellarmine on Saturday for the home opener at Karl Van Norman Field.
