MANSFIELD –
Larissa Motts' eighth minute goal proved to be all Mansfield (2-1, 0-0 PSAC) needed to hand Slippery Rock (2-1, 0-0 PSAC) its first loss of the season in a 1-0 final on Saturday at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
Despite being against a PSAC opponent, the game does not count toward the conference standings.
Motts took the first two shots of the game with her second finding the back of the cage at the 7:07 mark. It was the first of the season and fourth of her career for the sophomore. Motts recorded an assist in Mansfield's season opening win over Southern Connecticut State on Saturday.
Mansfield outshot Slippery Rock 12-7 in the game and put 11 shots on frame. The Mountaineers also held a 10-6 advantage in penalty corners.
Sophomore keeper
Brittany Ryan notched her second shutout of the season while making four saves.
Motts and
Chelsea Tanco each put three shots on goal with
Amber Prince and
Gabby Hieber recording two apiece.
Third-year head coach
Brittany Hansrote has already matched Mansfield's win total from a year ago as she continues to build the program. It makes Mansfield's first win over Slippery Rock since the 2011 season.
The Mountaineers host non-conference opponent Bellarmine (Ky.) on Saturday for the home opener at Karl Van Norman Field.
