JOHNSTOWN –
Kersten O'Brien scored her first goal of the season but neither team could find the back of the net in double overtime as Pitt-Johnstown (1-0-1) and Mansfield (0-0-1) tied Saturday afternoon.
O'Brien started the scoring in the ninth minute, slotting a goal off a pass from
Eleni Gebbia. The Mountain Cats battled the solid Mountaineer defense until a header goal from Kyra Watkins evened the match with four minutes left in the first.
The second half began with both teams hammering off shots. Gebbia repeatedly slipped passed defenders taking four shots in the second half, two of them on goal.
Nicolette DeSalvatore also added a shot but goalie Leigh Appolonia stayed strong heading into overtime.
The Mountaineers dominated in shots on goal, placing 75 percent of their shots with accuracy.
Rachel Fox made five saves in regular gameplay, finishing out the game with a total of seven saves. Fox made an incredible save on a penalty kick late in the second overtime period to preserve the tie for Mansfield. Leigh Appolonia made eight saves for Pitt-Johnstown.
