BRADENTON, Fla. – Mansfield University freshman
Hunter Watkins earned 2
nd Team All-American honors with a 12
th place finish in the javelin at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships hosted at IMG Academy.
Watkins, one of just five freshmen in the field, registered a top throw of 61.84 meters in the preliminary round to earn All-American recognition. His best throw came in the first round of flight one prelims.
It's the first All-American honor for a Mountaineer track & field athlete since Mike Robinson in 2014 and the first for a thrower since Mike Gray in 2008.
Watkins hit a personal best of 64.14 meters earlier this season, ranking second on the Mansfield all-time list. The rookie earned All-PSAC and All-Atlantic Region this outdoor season.
It marks back-to-back seasons that Mansfield had a javelin thrower qualify for the NCAA Championships.
