Softball Takes Sole Possession of 2nd in PSAC Central with Sweep at UPJ

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – Arianna Young tossed her second complete game shutout and Connor Decker earned a win in relief to lead Mansfield to a pair of big PSAC Central wins at Pitt-Johnstown on Saturday.

Mansfield cruised to a 4-0 win in the opener and rallied for a 5-4 extra inning victory in the nightcap.

With the Mountaineers taking two wins and IUP sweeping Lock Haven on Saturday, Mansfield moves into sole possession of second place in the PSAC Central with an 8-4 divisional record.

Mansfield (20-9, 8-4 PSAC Central) got the scoring started in game one when Kayla Hahn doubled in a run in the top of the second then moved to third on an error. Hahn was brought in by Leah McGovern's RBI single to make it 2-0 in the Mounties' favor.

Pitt-Johnstown (13-17, 2-10 PSAC Central) threatened in the bottom of the third with a runner at third base with two outs, but a pop out ended the inning.

In the top of the fourth, Mansfield extended its lead to 4-0 when Alli McGovern singled to right field to bring home her sister and Deshae Jones scored on a throwing error in the same play.

The Mountain Cats put a runner on third in the next two innings but the Mansfield defense held strong to preserve the shutout.

Young improved to 12-4 in the circle, pitching 7.0 innings with four strikeouts and no walks allowed. It was the sophomore's 13th complete game and second shutout of the season. Young moves into a tie for the fifth most wins in a season in program history.

In the first inning of game two, Rachael Sterner singled to left field to drive in a run then Melanie Taylor doubled to right field to score another.

Pitt-Johnstown answered in the bottom of the second with a pair of runs to tie the game at 2-2. The Cats took their first lead of the day with another run in the fourth inning.

The lead would be short lived however as Taylor drove in Sterner and Laura Lawson with a single to left field to put the Mounties ahead 4-3.

Facing last at bats and trailing by a run in the bottom of the seventh, UPJ forced extra innings when Morgan Cannin scored an unearned run following a throwing error.

Leah McGovern led off the top of the eighth with a double in the gap then moved to third with a sacrifice bunt. With two outs, Alli McGovern singled to left field to score pinch runner Nikki Watkins and put the Mounties ahead.

Decker retired the side in order in the bottom of the eighth to win her third game of the season. Decker pitched 3.0 innings with just two hits and no earned runs or walks allowed.

Starting pitcher Sierra Storm tossed 5.0 innings and struck out two batters.

UPJ totaled four errors in the loss with Mansfield recording three.

The sweep gives Mansfield 20 wins for the fourth time in the past six seasons.

The Mountaineers travel to Lock Haven on Friday before hosting Bloomsburg for Senior Day at Helen Lutes Field on Saturday.
