Game Recap: Baseball |

Late Runs Lift Shippensburg to a Pair of Wins

MANSFIELD – Shippensburg scored six runs in the top of the ninth to take game one 9-3 before scoring two late runs to complete the sweep over Mansfield with a 4-3 win Friday at Shaute Field in PSAC East play.

Peter Pena stroked his team-leading seventh home run of the season to move into a tie for second in the PSAC for most round-trippers.

Mansfield (16-18, 5-9 PSAC East) had Shippensburg on the ropes early as a Ryan Paige double drove in a run before back-to-back singles by Tanner Klein and Jerry Chavarria scored two more to give the Mounties and early 3-0 lead.

Shippensburg (15-16-1, 8-6 PSAC East) got one back in the third and tied the game at 3-3 with two more runs in the fifth.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Mountaineers threatened with bases loaded and no outs, but a double play and strikeout quickly ended the inning.

Neither team could plate the game-winning run in seven innings so the game move into extra innings. Shippensburg hung six runs in the top of the ninth inning to earn the win.

Gabe Mosser went 8.0 innings on the mound with eight hits, three earned runs and two walks while striking out nine batters.

Tyler Guidos was hit with the loss in relief.

In the nightcap, Shippensburg scored a run in the second and third innings as Raider starting pitcher Jacob Menders worked a no-hitter through the first 3.2 innings.

Pena ended the no-hit bid with an emphatic solo home run over the left field fence to cut the Ship lead in half.

In the bottom of the fifth, Klein and Chavarria got aboard with singles before Brady Mengel stroked a huge double to left field to score two runs and give the Mounties a 3-2 lead.

The Raiders answered in the next inning with a run to tie the game up at 3-3.

In the top of the seventh, Zach Goertzen hit what proved to be the game-winning home run down the right field line. The Mounties went down in order in their final at bats.

Meders earned the win in 6.0 innings of work with Michael Hope picking up the save.

Joseph Deperno took the loss in relief.

The Mountaineers travel to Shippensburg on Saturday.
