CARY, N.C. –
Laura Lawson hit a grand slam in the top of the first as Mansfield held off Queens Charlotte 6-5 Sunday in the Mounties' final game of the Shaw Softball Challenge.
Mansfield went 4-1 in their opening weekend with wins over Bowie State, Elizabeth City State, Fairmont State and Queens. The lone loss came in a tight 4-3 final against Chowan.
In the top of the first,
Alli McGovern got aboard with a walk before Wickwire reached on an error. Two at bats later, Rachel Sterner drew a walk to load the bases, setting up Lawson. With a 1-2 count, Lawson cleared the bases with a home run to deep centerfield, giving Mansfield (4-1, 0-0 PSAC) and early 4-0 lead. It was the second home run of the weekend for Lawson.
Abby Lathan cut the Queens (13-9, 0-0 SAC) deficit to 4-1 with her solo shot in the bottom of the second.
After a scoreless third,
Deshae Jones got aboard with a single through the left side and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. A
Koryn Wickwire single put runners on the corners as Sterner singled to drive in a run and make it 5-1 Mansfield.
Facing two outs in the top of the fifth,
Anastasia Hester drove the second pitch she saw over the left field fence to add another run for the Mountaineers. It was the first career home run for the freshman.
Queens put together four runs on six hits in the bottom of the sixth to close within one run of the Mounties at 6-5. The Royals got a runner aboard with a two-out error in the seventh, but Mansfield relief pitcher
Sierra Storm forced the final out to preserve the win.
Starting pitcher
Arianna Young earned her third win of the season in the circle, scattering nine hits. Storm earned her first save of the year.
Eight different Mountaineers collected hits in the game.
Lawson opened her senior season in incredible fashion, going 10-19 (.526) at the plate with eight of those hits going for extra bases including five doubles, two home runs and a triple. She totaled nine RBIs and four runs.
The Mountaineers begin their spring break trip on Saturday, March 11 in Salem, Va. before traveling to Myrtle Beach, S.C.
