MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Mansfield out-hit Spalding over the doubleheader, but came up just short in a pair of one-run losses on Wednesday.

The Mountaineers dropped game one 2-1 before falling 9-8 in game two.

In the bottom of the first in game one,
Taylor Chidester line a one-out double to left centerfield before
Laura Lawson's base knock in the next at bat drove in a run.

Spalding (2-2) put runners in scoring position in each of the first five innings of the game, but the Mountaineer defense held strong to preserve the lead. The Golden Eagles finally got on the board with what would prove to be the game-winning runs in the sixth.

Lawson and
Leah McGovern hit doubles in the sixth and seventh innings, but Mansfield (6-4) couldn't convert them into runs.

Sierra Storm allowed just one earned run through 7.0 innings with three strikeouts in the loss.

Robyn Schoen struck out seven in a complete game win.
Â
Lawson opened game two with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt before Chidester drove her in to take an early 1-0 advantage.

Spalding responded by hanging six runs, the final three unearned, in the bottom of the inning to quickly take the lead. The Eagles tacked on another run in the second to lead 7-0.

Melanie Taylor and Chidester hit back-to-back singles to start the third.
Koryn Wickwire's double in the gap drove in a run before
Deshae Jones plated two more on a single through the right side.
Hannah Breitigan reached with a single and moved into scoring position along with Jones on a passed ball. Starting pitcher
Arianna Young helped her own cause by doubling in both runners to cut the deficit to one run.

In the fourth, Chidester laced a one-out triple to right field then scored on a
Rachael Sterner sac fly to tie the game at 7-7.

Spalding got the go ahead run in the bottom of the fourth, but the lead was short lived as
Casey Pearce got aboard and later scored on a pair of errors. The Eagles responded with another run in the bottom of the frame to take a 9-8 lead.

The Mounties put a runner on second with two outs in the seventh, but could not bring the tying run home.

Young took just her second loss of the season following 6.0 innings in the circle with three strikeouts. Olivia Leet fanned five batters and did not issue a walk in the complete game win.

Mansfield takes on Lycoming in a doubleheader on Thursday.
