CARY, N.C. –
Peter Pena hit a three run bomb as Mansfield hung a five spot in the first inning of game two to hold off Assumption 5-4 Saturday afternoon and earn a non-conference split at the USA Baseball Complex.

The Mountaineers fell 9-4 in the opener.

In the nightcap, Mansfield (2-4, 0-0 PSAC East) put two aboard in the bottom of the first with walks by
Dio Infante and
Tanner Klein before Pena stroked his second home run of the day to give the Mounties a 3-2 lead. It was Pena's third round tripper of the season. With bases loaded,
Colby Schearer drove in two more runs with a single as Mansfield posted five runs in the inning.

Assumption (1-1, 0-0 NE-10) scored runs in the third and fifth innings to pull within a run. The Greyhounds threatened late with bases loaded and just one out in the seventh inning, but Joseph Deperno retired the final two batters to earn the save.

Luke Hils earned his first win of the season, pitching 6.0 innings with just one earned run and one walk allowed to go along with three strikeouts.

Assumption took an early lead in game one, hanging four runs in the top of the first and another in the third.

In the bottom of the third, Infante drew a two-out walk and Klein wore a pitch to put runners on first and second. Pena's double plated a pair of runs to cut the Assumption lead to 5-2.

The Greyhounds added three more runs in the fourth, but
Wes Custer scored an unearned run in the bottom of the frame.

Assumption pushed another run across in the fifth to increase its lead to 9-3. Pena hit a solo shot in the seventh but the Mounties could not overcome the deficit.

Pepper took loss for Mansfield with Kevin O'Connor earning the win, pitching 6.0 innings with two earned runs and three strikeouts.

Pena drove in six runs on three hits in the doubleheader.

Mansfield plays two more against Assumption on Sunday.
