Powell’s And-1 in Final Minute Lifts Mansfield Past Edinboro 69-64

MANSFIELD – Cedrick Powell came up with a huge offensive rebound and converted an and-1 in the final minute to lift Mansfield past visiting Edinboro 69-64 in a wild finish at Decker Gymnasium in PSAC crossover play Saturday.

The game opened with four lead changes before a Tyler Moffe 3-pointer gave Mansfield (2-3, 2-1 PSAC) a four-point advantage just over four minutes in. The lead changed hands three more times before an Anthony Coleman trey put Edinboro (4-2, 2-1 PSAC) up by five points.

Four more lead changes later, the Fighting Scots would hold another five-point lead with just over four minutes remaining in the half, but neither side could pull away. Edinboro went into halftime holding a slight 29-27 advantage.

The Scots opened the second half with a Mike Beck trifecta, but Mansfield went on an 11-2 run to hold the biggest lead of the game at 40-34. The lead would be short lived however, as after five more lead changes, Edinboro went up 58-54 with just over five minutes remaining in the game.

Tied 61-61 with two minutes to play in the game, Edinboro's Trey Staunch scored on a jumper in the paint and got the foul. A good free throw put the Scots in a good position with a 64-61 advantage.

However, Jeremiah Worthem sank a clutch 3-pointer from the corner to tie the game and the Mountaineers came up with a defensive stop at the other end. Powell converted an old-fashioned three point play of his own with 22 second remaining to swing the momentum in Mansfield's favor.

Another defensive stop for the Mounties and two good free throws by Powell sealed the deal.

Malik Carter scored a team-high 14 points for Mansfield to go along with six rebounds and three assists. Worthem made it three straight games with a double-double recording 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Matt Tamanosky had 13 points and seven boards with Moffe and Powell scoring 11 and 10 points respectively.

Coleman scored a game-high 22 points for Edinboro with Keshawn Liggins posting a double-double with 17 points and 14 rebounds.

The Mountaineers held a 43-33 rebounding advantage in the win. Edinboro shot 43.3% (13-30) from beyond the arc, but Mansfield countered by holding a 30-12 advantage on points in the paint.

Mansfield hosts Mercyhurst tomorrow at Decker Gymnasium for a 3 p.m. start.
