INDIANA –
Amber Prince scored the go-ahead goal with just over two minutes remaining to lift Mansfield past IUP 2-1 on the road Wednesday and avenge an early season loss to the Crimson Hawks.
It marks the eighth win of the year for Mansfield, the most in a decade since winning 11 during the 2007 season. It is also the first win over IUP since a 2-1 overtime win during the 2013 season.
The victory exacts revenge on a heartbreaking Sept. 12 loss to IUP at Karl Van Norman Field where the Hawks scored three late goals, including the game-winner as time expired.
Mansfield (8-9, 3-6 PSAC) struck first in the 13
th minute when
Meghan Griffin scored her second of the season following a penalty corner by Prince. Griffin put the Mounties ahead with a hard hit ball into the left side of the cage.
IUP (5-11, 2-7 PSAC) held the advantage in shots (12-6) and penalty corners (9-8) in the first half, but the Mountaineer defense held strong to preserve to 1-0 lead through halftime.
The Hawks found the equalizer in the 60
th minute when Kalista Gioglio scored off a penalty corner.
At the 67:49 mark, Prince saved the day when she collected a deflected ball off the keeper's pads and into the left side of the goal. It was the second score of the season for the junior.
IUP had no answer as the Mountaineers came away with their third road win of the year. It is the second time on the season that the Mounties have earned back-to-back victories.
Brittany Ryan recorded her eighth win of the year making seven saves on the day.
Mansfield concludes the 2017 season at No. 2 East Stroudsburg on Saturday.
