Turnovers Plague Mounties in Setback to No. 14 Shippensburg
MANSFIELD –
Cedrick Powell scored a season-best 21 points but Mansfield couldn't overcome a season-high 22 turnovers in dropping an 85-72 PSAC East contest to unbeaten and nationally-ranked Shippensburg Monday evening on First Citizens Community Bank Court in Decker Gymnasium.
Mansfield struggled to get untracked early, turning the ball over 14 times and shooting just 36% from the floor to trail 37-22 at halftime.
The Mountaineers used a 17-9 run over the first five minutes of the second half to pull to 48-39 on a layup by
Matt Tamanosky before Shippensburg extended its lead to 65-46 with eight minutes to play.
Mansfield rallied again closing to nine points at 77-68 on a layup by
Malik Carter but could pull no closer.
The Mountaineers shot 63.3% from the floor in the second half and 51% for the game while out rebounding the Raiders 36-28 but couldn't overcome the turnovers.
In addition to his 21 points, Powell also dished out eight assists. Carter scored 17 points while Tamanosky added 12 points and six rebounds.
Shippensburg, which improved to 13-0 overall and 9-0 in the PSAC, was led by Antonio Kellem with a game-high 25 points. Justin McCarthur scored 16 points with Dustin Sleva adding 15 points and Abe Massaley 10 points.
Mansfield travels to Bloomsburg on Wednesday.
