MANSFIELD – Mansfield freshman
Christie Buyer scored her first career goal in the game's opening minutes, but Saint Michael's rallied for two goals to secure a 2-1 victory in the opening game of the Dr. Art DeGenaro Classic at Van Norman Field on Saturday.
Buyer made a great heads up play in the fourth minute, stealing the ball from a defender and going five-hole on the keeper to put the Mounties on the board.
Saint Michael's Jackie Matthews evened the score in the 32
nd minute with a pass in front of goal from Carolyn Avery.
Despite Mansfield outshooting their opponent 10-3 in the second half, it was Saint Michael's that pushed the go-ahead goal in the 42
nd minute on Avery's ball that just crossed the goal line over an outstretched Mountie defender.
Junior
Emily Blidy prevented an opponent goal in the 27
th minute with a defensive save. It was the sixth of her career.
Mansfield held a 15-10 shots advantage in the game with 10 going on goal from the much-improved Mountaineer offense.
The Mountaineers will take on Southern Connecticut State in the second and final day of the DeGenaro Classic on Sunday.
