MANSFIELD –
Katie Lipski converted a game-winning penalty stroke in overtime to lift Mansfield past Southern Connecticut State on Sunday afternoon in the finale of the Dr. Art DeGenaro Field Hockey Classic at Karl Van Norman Field.
The penalty was called just two minutes into the first overtime period following a collision near goal on a Mansfield (1-1, 0-0 PSAC) scoring opportunity. Lipski was called on to end the game with what would become the third penalty stroke goal of her career.
The win is the first for Mansfield head coach
Brittany Hansrote who brought in her first recruiting class this season. It snaps a 19-game losing streak that dates back to the final game of the 2014 season.
Southern Connecticut State (0-2, 0-0 NE-10) was first to get on the scoreboard with a Zoe Fanolis goal in the 25
th minute. The Mountaineers outshot the Owls 19-11 in the first half but were unable to push across a game-tying goal.
Mansfield evened the score in the 45
th minute when
Tatum Albertson swiped a
Larissa Motts pass from the top of the circle into the left side of the cage. It was the first career goal for the sophomore.
The Mounties outshot their opponent 31-14 with 13 shots on goal in regulation, but neither team could score the game-winner. Mansfield also held a 16-7 penalty corner advantage in the game.
Freshman
Christie Buyer continued to be a nuisance to opposing defenses, putting a team-high five shots on goal.
Laura Lawson made 10 saves in the game.
Mansfield travels to No. 6 Shippensburg on Saturday for a game that does not count toward the PSAC standings.
