Mounties Sweep Up Penn College

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Mounties Sweep Up Penn College

MANSFIELD – Billy Rummings tossed a complete game victory in the opener and Evan McAndrew earned the win in the nightcap to sweep visiting Penn College by scores of 11-1 and 13-3 in non-conference play at Shaute Field Thursday afternoon.

Rummings went the distance, allowing just three hits and striking out nine batters, to earn his first collegiate victory.

Mansfield (17-17, 5-11 PSAC East) opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning when Tanner Klein drove in a pair of runs with a double to right field scoring Peter Pena and Zephan Kash.

That lead stood until a big seven-run inning in the bottom of the fourth by the Mountaineers. Pena and Paige started it by scoring via bases-loaded walks before a Taylor Hillson RBI-single plated Wes Custer. Another bases-loaded walk brought home Huyett. With two outs, a dropped fly by the right fielder cleared the bases and put the Mounties on top 9-0.

Penn College (8-13, 1-1 NEAC) pushed its only score of the game across with an unearned run in the top of the fifth.

Huyett belted a two-run home run over the centerfield fence to extend the Mounties' lead to 11-1. Huyett accounted for five Mansfield runs in the game himself, scoring twice and driving in three more.

Bradley Walter took the loss for Penn College, allowing five hits and six earned runs over 3.1 innings.

Mansfield got on the board early once again in game two with Custer driving in Hillson before back-to-back walks with the bases juiced pushed across Scott Rockwell and Kash. Zach Merkle's RBI-single to center added another run with a Michael Jankowski sacrifice fly scoring another to put Mansfield ahead 5-0.

In the second inning, Zephan Kash scored on an error after reaching with a one-out single. RBI-singles from Paige and Jankowski extended the MU lead to 8-0.

The Wildcats got on the board in the top of the third, but Mansfield responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the frame when Klein's single plated a runner. Penn College pushed two more runs across in the fourth to close the gap to 9-3.

A Hillson sac fly in the bottom of the fourth scored another run and put the Mounties in double-figures for the second time on the day.
