Millersville Uses Long-Ball to Hold Off MountiesMILLERSVILLE – Freshman
Joe Marshall scored a season-high 21 points and Mansfield had three players' record double-doubles but the Mountaineers couldn't overcome a slow start and a barrage of 3-pointers by Millersville in suffering a 77-70 setback in a PSAC East matchup Monday night.
Millersville jumped out to an 8-0 lead a little more than two minutes into the game before Mansfield rallied cutting the lead to two points at 15-13 on a Marshall layup five minutes later.
The Marauders would steadily pull away throughout much of the remainder of the first half, extending their lead to as much as 34-21 with just over seven minutes remaining before halftime.
Mansfield chipped away, starting with a 3-pointer by
Eric Lewis Jr., and closed to 37-30 after a layup by
Da'Quan Jones at intermission.
The Mountaineers continue to close the gap early in the second half, pulling to 47-43 on a layup by Marshall five minutes after the break. But Millersville countered with the long-ball, hitting back-to-back 3-pointers to extend the lead to double-digits at 53-43.
A pair of free throws by
Brad Williams cut the lead to 65-60 with just over five minutes to play but the Mountaineers could pull no closer.
37 of Millersville's 60 shots from the floor were 3-pointers with the Marauders connecting on 11 of them. Mansfield was 3-of-19 on 3-point attempts. The Mountaineers held a 54-35 rebounding advantage.
Marshall scored 11 of his 21 points in the first half while also pulling down 10 rebounds as the Mountaineers had a rare three player's record double-doubles.
Brad Williams scored 14 points with a game-high 12 rebounds.
Matt Tamanosky picked up his sixth double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 boards.
Da'Quan Jones scored 11 points.
Shawn Williams led Millersville 25 points.
Mansfield closes out the season at Cheyney on Wednesday.
