Kash Money! Mounties Stun #3 Mercyhurst with Walk-Off in Season Opener

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Kash Money! Mounties Stun #3 Mercyhurst with Walk-Off in Season Opener

SUTHERLAND, Va. – Zephan Kash crushed the first pitch he saw over the right field fence to stun No. 3 Mercyhurst in a walk-off victory Saturday afternoon in the Mountaineer's season opener.

Mansfield (1-0, 0-0 PSAC East) entered the ninth inning with a 6-3 lead, but defending regional champion Mercyhurst used two hits and an error to score three runs and force the game into the bottom of the inning. Kash, who led-off the bottom of the ninth, wasted no time ending the game.

The first three innings featured a pitcher's duel between Tommy Alexander of Mansfield and Colin McKee of Mercyhurst (3-2, 0-0 PSAC West). Both hurlers allowed just one hit and no runs through the first third of the game. The Lakers pushed across the first run in the top of the fourth with a solo shot over the left field fence by Austin Alonge.

The Mountaineers tied the game when Owen Lukens drove in Matt Kurelja from third in the bottom of the sixth.

Another Mercyhurst home run in the top of the seventh by Daniel Elliot put the Lakers back on top 2-1.

Zach Merkle and Taylor Hillson each drew walks in the bottom of the seventh before Kash was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two outs. Kurelja pushed home the tying run by drawing a walk, followed by Ryan Paige's two RBI double. Tanner Klein also drew a walk to load up the bases again to set up Lukens for a two RBI single as Mansfield jumped out to a 6-2 lead.

An error allowed Mercyhurst to add a run in the eighth before scoring three more in the ninth to tie the game.

Joseph DePerno earned the win in his first career outing, pitching the final two outs of the game. Alexander scattered five hits over 6.0 innings worked allowing an earned run while striking out two batters.

Jake Hall took the loss for Mercyhurst. McKee allowed just two hits and fanned six over 5.0 innings.

It marks the first win over a nationally-ranked program since Mansfield upended Millersville 3-2 during the 2013 season.
