VESTAL, N.Y. –
Malik Carter scored a game-high 25 points but Division I Binghamton put on a sizzling shooting performance in downing Mansfield 91-71 in an exhibition game for the Mountaineers Wednesday night at the Events Center.
Binghamton shot 54% for the game but the Bearcats were almost perfect from the floor early in each half while controlling the boards by a 41-31 margin.
The Mountaineers got in a big hole early and clawed their way back into the game but Binghamton answered each run with deadly outside shooting.
Mansfield took an early 3-2 lead on a 3-pointer by Carter before Binghamton used torrid shooting, going on a 16-2 run to take a 18-5 lead five minutes into the game after hitting 78% of its shots from the floor over that span.
The Mountaineers chipped away, slowly closing the deficit and pulling to single-digits at 28-19 on a 3-pointer by
Cedrick Powell with eight minutes remaining in the half.
Mansfield, behind Carter who scored 17 points in the first half, continued to close the gap pulling to 41-36 on a pair of free throws by Carter with less than three minute remaining until halftime.
Mansfield trailed by five 46-41 after a pair of
Gerasimos Koutoufas free throws before Binghamton closed out the half with a 48-41 lead.
Binghamton used an 8-0 run to open the second half taking a 56-41 lead before the Mountaineers countered cutting the score to 62-57 on a layup by Powell at the 13:01 mark but that was as close as Mansfield would come.
The Mountaineers made a season-high nine 3-pointers but Binghamton answered with 12 of their own.
Jahyde Gardiner scored 13 points and Koutoufas added 12 points for Mansfield.
Bobby Ahearn had a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds while Dusan Perovic came off the bench to score 19 points to lead Binghamton.
Mansfield travels to Clarion Saturday.
