#5 California Outpaces Mounties

MANSFIELD – Mansfield held No. 5 California to its lowest point total of the season, but the defending PSAC Champions were too much for the Mounties coming away with a 73-37 win Sunday afternoon in conference crossover play.

Mansfield (1-2, 0-2 PSAC) slowed the game down and limited possessions, but was stymied by a 22.5% (9-40) shooting from the field while California (5-0, 2-0 PSAC) connected on 46.7% (28-60) of chances.

Seairra Barrett missed just one field goal to net a game-high 21 points and was just shy of a double-double with nine boards. Gina Vallecorse scored 13 and Miki Glenn added 11 to round out the Vulcans double-figure scoring. Glenn also dished out eight dimes in the game.

Mansfield was led by Brielle Kelly's nine points with Alyssa Mullins chipping in eight. Freshman Morgan Westbrook scored a season-best six points off the bench.

Tianna Jackson and Micaiah Battle each pulled down a team-best five boards.

The Mountaineers trailed by just seven points at the end of the first quarter at 18-11. However, Cal outscored the Mounties 16-2 in the second quarter to hold a 34-13 halftime lead.

The Vulcans increased their lead in the second half to pick up their second PSAC win of the season.

Mansfield travels to Mercy (N.Y.) for non-conference action on Wednesday.
