Mountie Comeback Falls Short in Final Minute

Malik Carter hit a 3-pointer in the final seconds to pull Mansfield to within two points but Seton Hill connected on a pair of free throws with 1.2 seconds remaining to hold off the Mountaineers 71-67 in a PSAC crossover game Saturday afternoon on First Citizens Community Bank Court in Decker Gymnasium.
Mansfield got off to a horrendous start of the game hitting just 14.6% of its shots over the first 10 minutes. The Mountaineers trailed by as much as 27-13 twelve minutes into the game before closing the gap to 34-26 at halftime.
The Mountaineers went on a 6-0 run to open the second half, pulling to 34-32 on a
Jahmir Green three minutes into the half.
Mansfield tied the game at 40-40 with a Carter layup with 13 minutes to go and took its first lead of the contest on a layup by
Matt Tamanosky less than a minute later.
With just under five minutes remaining, Seton Hill went on a 9-2 run, taking a 66-55 advantage with just under three minutes remaining.
But Mansfield countered with a 6-0 run pulling to 66-63 with just over a minute remaining.
Seton Hill would hit four straight free throws, all of them by Noah Davis to hold on for the win.
Despite missing some of its top players, Mansfield took 72 shots to Seton Hill's 66 and held a remarkable 45-42 rebounding advantage over the much bigger Griffiths.
Carter added four steals and scored 18 of his game-high 21 points in the second half.
Matt Tamanosky recorded a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds while
Cedrick Powell had an excellent all-around game scoring 11 points and pulling down eight rebounds with five assist and two steals. Gerasimo Koutoufas just missed a double-double with 9 points and 10 rebounds.
Nathan Davis led four Seton Hill players in double-figures with 17 points. Spencer Casson recorded a triple-double with 11 points, 11 rebounds and 10 blocked shots.
Mansfield host California Sunday in a PSAC crossover game.
