ETTRICK, Va. –
Matt Tamanosky scored a game-high 23 points to lead Mansfield's second-half charge, but the Mounties couldn't overcome a slow start, falling 66-60 to St. Augustine's in the Virginia State Tip-Off Classic Friday evening in the season opener for both teams.
Mansfield (0-1, 0-0 PSAC) had trouble finding its rhythm in the first half as St. Augustine's (1-0, 0-0 CIAA) went into halftime with a confident 36-22 lead.
The Mounties pulled within 10 points at 49-39 with under 10 minutes to play in the second half and made it a five point game at 54-49 four minutes later. Mansfield trailed 62-58 with 45 seconds remaining in the game but couldn't overcome the deficit.
The Mountaineers outscored the Falcons 38-30 in the second half.
Tamanosky hit nine field goals and three free throws on his way to a game-high 23 points while
Jahyde Gardiner added 14 points.
Cedrick Powell chipped in eight points with three assists and
Gerasimos Koutoufas recorded seven points.
Quincy January led St. Augustine's with 19 points.
Mansfield takes on host Virginia State tomorrow.
