Heartbreaker – Mounties Fall in Double OT

MANSFIELD – Mansfield rallied to tie the game on a header by freshman Emily Smith late in the second half to send the game into overtime but Bloomsburg scored off a rebounded shot in double-overtime to pull out a 2-1 win in a PSAC women's soccer match Wednesday night at Karl Van Norman Field.

Defense prevailed as the teams battled to a scoreless tie in the first half.

Bloomsburg got on the board first when Jessica Supp scored in the 58th minute after a Mountaineer turnover hitting a shot from 20-yards out off an assist by Allie Barber.

The goal woke up the Mansfield offense with the Mountaineers putting shots on goal by Nikki Ortiz, Kersten O'Brien and Alexis Bittel before Smith scored off a corner kick by Ortiz that was headed forward by Nicole Wynne to Smith who headed it into the goal.

Ortiz put another ball on goal less than a minute later and Mountaineer goalie Rachel Fox turned back three shots by Bloomsburg to send the game into overtime.

Caitlyn McNichol had two shots for the Mountaineers to open overtime but Mansfield couldn't generate any other scoring opportunities while Fox turned back Bloomsburg's only shot on goal.

Bloomsburg got the game-winner midway through the second overtime when Megan Callan's hard-shot hit the crossbar and was put into the net past a Mansfield defender by Jenna Fisher.

Mansfield held a 23-19 shot advantage in the game with Fox picking up nine saves to Bloomsburg's six saves by Devon Haviland.

Mansfield host Gannon this Saturday afternoon at the Soccer Field.
