Late Goals Sink Mounties in Thriller at The Rock

SLIPPERY ROCK – Mansfield's Laura Lawson was stellar in goal and backed up by her defense, but a pair of late Slippery Rock goals in the final minutes made the difference in a 2-0 thriller Tuesday afternoon.
 
Lawson made 13 saves to hold Slippery Rock (4-7, 1-3 PSAC) scoreless for the first 66 minutes of the game and got help from defensive saves by Madison Wilinsky and Katie Lipski. It marks back-to-back games of double-figure saves and the fifth game of 10 or more saves by Lawson this season.
 
Mansfield currently leads the nation in team defensive saves with 11 on the season while Wilinsky ranks second individually with four defensive saves.
 
Lipski and Larissa Motts put the pressure of for Mansfield (1-10, 0-3 PSAC) offensively, each totaling two shots on goal. Christie Buyer and Amber Prince each had a shot on goal as the Mounties totaled six for the game as a team.
 
The Rock finally broke the scoreless tie in the 66th minute on Hannah Shirk's goal assisted by Savanna Robinson. Mansfield continued to press for the equalized until Megan McKay added another goal for Slippery Rock in the 68th minute.
 
Mansfield totaled six penalty corners in the game.
 
The Mountaineers begin a two-game home stand by hosting Mercyhurst on Saturday at Van Norman Field.
