Heartbreak Deja Vu All Over Again -- Mounties Lose Overtime Thriller on Senior Day

Heartbreak Deja Vu – Mounties Drop 3-2 OT Thriller on Senior Day – Meadows Moves Into Second Place on All-Time Goals List

MANSFIELD – It was Déjà vu all over again for the Mansfield University women's soccer team in a 3-2 overtime loss to Shippensburg Saturday evening at Karl Van Norman Field.

It marked the Mountaineers fifth overtime contest this season and their fourth straight loss when going more than 90 minutes in a game. Three of Mansfield last six games have gone into overtime losing 2-1 to Bloomsburg, 1-0 to Lock Haven and 3-2 to Shippensburg.

The game was also Senior Day with seniors Rachael Hohenwarter, Danielle Lentz and Sarah Nezelek all honored during pregame ceremonies.

Sophomore Delaney Meadows scored the game first goal taking a throw in from freshman Eleni Gebbia in the 30th minute and beating the goal from eight yards out. The goal was Meadows sixth goal of the season and 18th of her young career moving her into second place on the all-time school goal list.

The score remained 1-0 through the first half before Shippensburg's Paige Harris tied the game on an unassisted goal 10 minutes into the second half.

Mansfield retook the lead three minutes later when freshman Kersten O'Brien took a pass from fellow freshman Emily Smith over the middle, beating the keeper from 20 yards out giving the Mountaineers a 2-1 advantage. It was O'Brien's first collegiate goal.

Shippensburg tied the game in the 79th minute when Harris scored her second goal of the game, this time taking a long pass from Casey Rightmyer and putting it past the goalie from 10 yards out.

Mansfield controlled much of overtime taking six shots including a shot by Meadows that went just wide.

Shippensburg got the winning goal on a breakaway with two Mansfield defender colliding allowing Kat Hartner point-blank shot to bounce off the far post and into the path of the oncoming Sharon Juarez who put it away from three yards out.

Nezelek recorded five saves in her first start of the season while Kayla Kennedy had four saves for Shippensburg.
