Mounties End #2 East Stroudsburg’s Shutout Streak in 5-1 Loss

MANSFIELD – Mansfield University's Meghan Griffin ended No. 2 ranked East Stroudsburg University's three-game shutout streak and Laura Lawson recorded a season-high 23 saves in a 5-1 loss Wednesday afternoon at Karl Van Norman Field.

Griffin took a Christie Buyer penalty corner pass with no time remaining in the game and placed a well-struck ball past the keeper to end defending national champion East Stroudsburg's (11-3, 5-1 PSAC) shutout streak that dated back to September. The goal ended 293 minutes of consecutive shutout field hockey from the Warriors.

Lawson's 23 saves are the most for the senior since recording 25 denials against eventual national champion Millersville on Sept. 27, 2014. It also ties the NCAA Division II mark for most saves in a game this season with Sam Takac of Mercyhurst. Lawson currently tops the PSAC in saves per game.

Mansfield (1-2, 0-5 PSAC) put the pressure on early, recording two penalty corners and three shots on goal in the first 10 minutes of the game. The two teams were even until the Warriors' Desiraye Mack scored back-to-back goals in the 17th and 18th minutes. ESU took a 3-0 lead with a Bailey Quin goal in the 26th minute.

In the second half, the Warriors increased their lead with goals in the 47th and 54th minutes to lead 5-0.

Mansfield never quit fighting and set itself up for two penalty corners in the final moments of the second half with the second paying off for Griffin's second goal of the season.

Katie Lipski put four shots on goal with Buyer adding three to go along with her second assist of the year.

Mansfield travels to No. 8 Kutztown on Saturday.
