Meadows Strikes Again – Freshman's Goal Gives Mounties 1-0 Win over Pitt-JohnstownJOHNSTOWN – Sometimes one goal is better than three.
Mansfield freshman sensation
Delaney Meadows broke a 0-0 tie with a goal in the 85
th minute to lead the Mountaineers to a 1-0 win in a PSAC matchup Saturday afternoon at Pitt-Johnstown.
Meadows, coming off back-to-back hat-trick games, entered the game leading the PSAC in goals and points per game while also ranking second in the nation in both categories.
Mansfield ran into a pesky defense from the Mountain Lions, especially goalie Leigh Appolonia who had 11 saves on the day.
The Mountaineers held an 11-2 advantage in shots in the first half alone but could get the ball past Appolonia who recorded five first half saves.
Mansfield had first half shots on goal by
Danielle Lentz, Katlin Holborrn,
Abby Korber,
Kelsey Chapman and Meadows but couldn't find the back of the net.
The Mountaineers continued to carry the action in the second half with Meadows putting two more shots on net before final getting the game-winner with just over five minutes to play in regulation.
Meadows took a cross from Chapman and finished for the score.
It was the eight goal in her first five games for Meadows moving her into a tie for second in goals in a season with Lyndi Keiser (2006) and Colleen Corcoran (2005). It also marks the third straight game she's scored a goal.
Chapman had her third assist of the season extending her school career record in that category to 11.
Freshman goalie
Rachel Fox picked up her first collegiate shutout turning back five shots on goal.
The win was the second straight for the Mountaineers who improve to 2-3 on the year.
