Jones Records Double-Double but Notre Dame Pulls Away from Mounties in Second Half

Jones Records Double-Double -- Tops Four Mounties in Double-Figures -- Notre Dame Pulls Away From Mounties in Second Half

WEST LIBERTY, WV – Da'Quan Jones recorded a double-double and Mansfield had four players score in double-figures including 17 point efforts from freshman Joe Marshall and Jones, but a larger and more experienced Notre Dame (OH) College wore down the Mountaineers in the second half to pick up a 107-78 win in the second round of the Charles and Lavoo Crutchfield Classic at West Liberty University Sunday.

An undersized and young Mansfield team played a spirited opening 20 minutes, trailing just 40-36 at halftime behind a solid team-effort led by Jones 10 first half points.

But Notre Dame, which had beaten PSAC West California 86-69 in yesterday's opening round, went red-hot in the second half shooting a remarkable 67% from the floor over the final 20 minutes to pick up the win.

Marshall set the pace early in the game hitting four of his first five shots helping keep the contest close throughout the first half.

Sophomore Eric Lewis Jr., who scored a then career-high 15 points in yesterday's game against. No. 3 West Liberty, had 16 points on Sunday hitting 4-of-6 3-point attempts.

Jones, a sophomore, recorded the second double-double of his career, pulling down a game-high 10 rebounds in addition to his 17 points. He also dished out career-best five assists and had a steal. Sophomore Matt Tamanosky, who recorded a double-double in Saturday's game with 16 points and 12 rebounds, was forced to play conservatively after picking up a couple of early fouls but still ended the game with 14 points including 10 in the second half.

Mansfield hustled throughout the game picking up 20 second-chance points to Notre Dame's 12 while being outrebounded by the larger Falcons by just two boards (39-37).

Tyree Gaiter paced six Notre Dame players in double-figures with a game-high 25 points.

Mansfield will host Millersville in the Mountaineers home and PSAC opener this Wednesday night in Decker Gymnasium.
