Mansfield can't overcome early deficit in 6-2 setback at Southern Connecticut in season openerNew Haven, CT – The Mansfield University field hockey team could never overcome an early 3-0 deficit in falling 6-2 at Southern Connecticut in the season opener for both teams Saturday afternoon.

Chelsea TancoSouthern Connecticut scored the game's first goal midway through the first period on shot by Bailey McGinnis and added two more scores to take a 3-0 advantage with just under four minutes to play in the first half.
Mansfield closed the gap to 3-1 when
Jessi Swingle nailed a shot from the top of key set up by a penalty corner seven seconds before halftime.
McGinnis added the second of her three goals on the day 10 minutes into the second half.
The Mountaineer cut the gap three minutes later when freshman
Chelsea Tanco took a short pass from Clair Swink to score her first collegiate goal to pull to 4-2, but Southern Connecticut scored two more goal to put the game out of reach.
Sophomore
Laura Lawson record 10 saves in goal for Mansfield and the Mountaineers added two defensive saves by Swingle and
Katie Lipski.
Audrey Dolloff was credited with six saves for Southern Connecticut.
Mansfield will play Saint Michael's Sunday.
